Fall 2019 Programs and Events

Children’s Programs

  1. Running and Reading – Running and Reading is an after school program at Cedarbrae P.S. for students in Gr. 1-6. This program focuses on activities that promote physical activity and English literacy. The after school program is on Tuesdays from 3:40 – 5:30 pm starting October 1st – December 3rd. There will be no program on Tuesday October 15th.
  2. Wee Wellness This program is designed to teach children JK – grade 1 about the importance of developing and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits through yoga, storytelling and activities focused on self-reflection! Mondays from 3:40 -5pm at Cedarbrae Public School. There will be no program on Monday October 14th
  3. Run and LearnRun and Learn is an after school program at Winston Churchill P.S. for students in Gr. 1-3. This program focuses on activities that promote physical activity and English literacy. Run and Learn happens weekly on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:15pm starting October 2nd – December 4th. There will be no program on Wednesday October 16th.
  4. Discover Music – An opportunity for youth to practice positive leadership by learning ukulele and teaching these skills to a younger child in the community. Under the supervision of an Accredited Music Therapist, youth will undergo a five-week training program focused on developing positive leadership skills and building community through music. After training, the youth will each be paired with a younger child who they will teach ukulele to.  No musical experience required to participate in the program! Thursdays from 4-5pm Spots are limited, please contact us if interested.
  5. Home Reading – The Home Reading Assistance Program was developed in partnership with the Special Education Resource Teachers at Cedarbrae P.S. This program is meant to supplement the Home Reading program that takes place in Cedarbrae P.S. On Wednesdays and Thursdays (9:30-11:20am), Better Beginnings volunteers are assigned to a classroom and practice reading one-on-one with students in JK-Gr.4. Registration for this program is teacher-elected.
  6. Tutoring – The Adventure4Change tutoring program runs out of The Neighbourhood Hub on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and is open to students in grades 1 through 8. We welcome students to sign up to meet one-on-one with a university student tutor regarding a subject of the participant’s choosing. Sorry, this program is full. Contact us to join the waitlist.
  7. Bridge to Music – Bridges to Music is a program that offers low-cost violin lessons to elementary-school aged children. Funded by Sun Life Financial, this program is offered in partnership with Better Beginnings Waterloo, House of Friendship, and KW Symphony. Students receive weekly violin lessons at Sunnydale Community Centre.  Please contact Linda at Sunnydale Community Centre for more information  (519-883-0410)

Parent Programs

  1. Parents Night Out meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00pm at Cedarbrae Public School (enter through door E). Free program, no registration required. Children’s program available for school-aged children. Child care available for preschool aged children and infants. Please come join us for one, some, all, or any of these weeks! Weekly from November 6th – December 11th 2019.
  2. Coffee and Conversation – This group is for women in the Sunnydale neighbourhood and meets weekly on Mondays (10:00-11:30am) at the Sunnydale Community Centre. Weekly topics vary based on participant input. There is no registration for this group.
  3. English Class – Better Beginnings’ English class happens weekly on Wednesdays (1:00 pm – 3:00 pm) at The Neighbourhood Hub. This class is for parents in our community who need some extra help with language and literacy. Register online.
  4. Parent Wellness Group – Parent Wellness groups meet weekly on Thursdays (9:30 – 11:00 am) at Cedarbrae P.S. This group rotates through weekly topics of wellness including creativity, physical wellness, parenting, and food and nutrition. This group is open to any parents or caregivers of Cedarbrae P.S. students. There is no registration for this program.

Community Events

  1. Registration Day – Drop by The Neighbourhood Hub on Monday September 16th from 11am – 6pm to register your child or family in Adventure4Change fall programming. Registrations will be available online after 6pm until spots are full.
  2. Harvest Fest – Celebrate the fall with the family. There will be free and fun games for the whole family. No registration required. This event will be at Cedarbrae Public School. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Wednesday October 23rd 6:30pm – 7:30pm.
  3. Gingerbread Night – Bring the whole family to decorate a gingerbread house, enjoy snacks, take pictures in the photo booth, and get creative with winter crafts. Cost is $10/family. Registration required. Wednesday December 4th 6:30pm – 7:30pm at Cedarbrae Public School.
